Southeastern Region

Dear Fellow Alumni,

Vanessa GarciaIt is time to make a difference and “GO GREEN WITH JWU.” Campus President Arthur J. Gallagher has supported a number of GREEN initiatives during the 2007-2008 academic year. These efforts fall into several categories: energy efficiency, environmental awareness, and waste reduction. Some examples of each category are provided below.

  • Replacement of over 300 incandescent fixtures with high efficiency fluorescent in the Library and Student Dining Center
  • Installation of a lighting control system in the Academic Center which overrides a motion sensor system and powers off 50% of the public area lighting after hours
  • All exterior campus lighting controls have been upgraded to include controls which calculate sunset and sunrise on a daily basis to eliminate unnecessary burn time.
  • All kitchen classroom and Student Dining Center hood lighting has been converted from incandescent to fluorescent.
  • Projects are underway to install spot cooling systems in critical areas of the Academic Center which will allow the primary cooling system to use economizer settings during off hours, greatly reducing run time of major heating and cooling systems.
  •  JWU Recycles 100 % of carpet scraps & take up pieces on the campus

As your alumni manger, I have joined the Green Awareness Committee that has been organized with faculty, staff, and student members meeting regularly to identify possible greening opportunities and develop campus awareness via educational programs. On March 17, the Student Government Association hosted its first JWU “GO GREEN” Day.  Students were asked to sign a “Go Green” pledge to follow to “BECOME GREENER.”  The Office of Student Activities will begin to GREEN information in publications and postings.

I look forward to hearing from our alumni and your GREEN ideas.  We can all become GREEN with a few easy changes in our daily life.  For instance, conserve water, turn off the lights, think before printing, recycle, donate clothes, donate school supplies, use reusable water and coffee containers’; by doing this you are becoming GREEN.   Please, e-mail me at with your ideas to go GREEN or call 980-598-1201.

We are coming to an end of an exciting year at JWU Charlotte.  The Charlotte Campus opened its doors four years ago to our inaugural class.  On May 17, 2008 join us in welcoming JWU Charlotte’s graduates to our Alumni Community.  As Alumni they will embark on a new relationship with JWU.  Alumni have the opportunity to advance in character development by preserving their relationships with their Alma Mater.

The Student Alumni Association (SAA) has completed its inaugural year as a new club on campus.  The SAA was a huge success by building a strong spirit of unity among students and alumni.  In the 2007-2008 academic year, SAA held a Book Drive for local elementary schools, HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, SAA and Alumni Connection Lunch, JWU School Spirit Day and a SAA Senior Kick-off.

I am looking forward to another engaging year with alumni and visiting locations in the southeast region.  The next Regional events will be held in Virginia Beach, VA on 6/9/2008 and Washington, DC on 6/27/2008.  If you have any questions, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Vanesa Garcia
